Announcements:

-As you may have seen in previous communications, Archway Cicero is working together with the Southwest Autism Research and Resource Center (SARRC) on a research project regarding a universal screening for social challenges designed to be implemented in public schools. All students in 2nd and 4th grade at Archway Cicero will be screened by their teachers in November. Please read this letter from Christopher Smith, Vice President and Director of Research at SARRC, for more information about the screening. Answers to frequently asked questions are available here, and the screener that teachers  will be completing is available here. If you have further questions, please do not hesitate to reach out.
-Please send your student with a healthy snack and lunch to help him or her be successful throughout the day in the classroom.  We have noticed that students who have highly-processed and sugary meals have difficulty concentrating in class and regulating behavior, especially in the afternoon.

-As the weather (and our classrooms) becomes cool, school dress code states that students may wear a Cicero uniform sweater/sweatshirt or a solid navy sweater inside (no hoodies, please).  They may wear other types of jackets and sweatshirts outside at recess.

-Reading groups continue this week, and students should be reading their leveled readers out loud with parents 20-30 minutes every night. Please send books back to school on Mondays and Thursdays. Remember to record your child’s reading time in their planners!

Academics
Math
This week we will begin our unit on Division.  Students will divide by sharing equally into a given number of groups and write division equations.  Students will then apply this skill to word problems that involve sharing in equal groups.

Reading
This week we will continue our Greek Myths unit in conjunction with the Ancient Greece unit in History.
Poetry
This week we will be working on the poem “Windy Nights,” and begin recitations toward the end of the week.
Language Arts
The students will continue to review nouns and verbs both by identifying and labeling them in sentences.  We will continue to practice reading comprehension through sample passages and during reading groups.
Spalding
This week we will be learning 10 new words on Tuesday and Wednesday. We will review on Thursday and test on Friday.
Science
We will continue our unit on Insects.
History & Geography
This week we will continue our study of ancient Greece by discussing the Greek philosophers and Alexander the Great.

Best,
The Second Grade Team
