Buffalo Dusk

Buffalo Dusk
by Carl Sandburg

The buffaloes are gone.
And those who saw the buffaloes are gone.
Those who saw the buffaloes by thousands and how they
pawed the prairie sod into dust with their great hoofs,
their great heads down pawing on in a great pageant of dusk,
Those who saw the buffaloes are gone.
And the buffaloes are gone.

Field Trip!

Our field trip to Pioneer Village is on April 2nd.

We are in need of six chaperones per class.  Please email your child’s teacher if you are interested.  Chaperones must be fingerprint cleared. If the number of volunteers exceeds the number of spots we will use a lottery to determine who will chaperone.

Please make sure that you pay the field trip fee using the link below.

Westward Expansion Day!

Westward Expansion Day is coming up on March 4th.  If you are interested in donating supplies or volunteering, please use the signup link below:

Students will be allowed to wear either jeans and a pioneer shirt, or a pioneer dress. They can also wear cowboy boots. If they are not wearing cowboy boots, they need to wear their regular school shoes.  We will be outside, so feel free to also send in your student with cowboy hats, bonnets, or other accessories. No weapons please.  Students will not be required to wear their uniforms underneath their outfit, as long as it covers everything that the uniform does. For outfits that do not do so, each student is required to wear a shirt/skirt/leggings underneath that are uniform code. A good rule of thumb if you are unsure about your student’s outfit is to send in his or her uniform with them in their backpack.

We are looking forward to this special event!  This event will be volunteer only, and closed to additional visitors.

Review Questions for Westward Expansion:
What was the gold rush? Gold was discovered in California in 1848. People from around the world came to California in order to try to “strike it rich”
What was the Pony Express? A horse and rider relay system used to deliver mail across the US (over 2,000 miles) in under 10 days.
How did the Transcontinental Railroad affect Westward Expansion? It allowed more people to travel back and forth across the country faster, increasing expansion.
What were some occupations of people living in the West? Miners, Ranchers, Farmers

As an additional note, please be aware that parents are welcome to attend this event if they are fingerprinted volunteers. Please check your email for the signup that was sent out last week if you would like to volunteer.  Thank you for your cooperation. The second grade is very excited for this day!  :)

Announcements:
Please read aloud with your student each night. They should read their leveled book from the red book bag and read from their Science and History notes to review them. They must bring their books back each day. You should see the books being changed about once a week. Students may have their books longer if they forget to bring their book on a reading group day.

We are still in great need of reading volunteers. The reading groups program cannot work without your volunteers.
