Seasons

- Seasons happen because the Earth is tilted on its AXIS. When the Northern Hemisphere is tilted towards the sun, that part of the Earth experiences Summer. When it is tilted away from the Earth, it experiences Winter.
- When there are equal hours of daylight and darkness, we call this an equinox. This happens in Spring and Fall.
- The longest day of the year is the summer solstice.
- The shortest day of the year is the winter solstice.

 Water Cycle

Be able to draw and label the three parts of the water cycle.

Evaporation - Sun heats the water and brings it upwards
Consensation - Water vapor in the atmosphere turns to water (clouds)
Precipitation - Rain, snow, sleet, and hail from clouds

Solid - Ice
Liquid - Water
Gas - Vapor/Steam

  • Water in the air is known as humidity
  • All the water on Earth now is all the water that has ever been on Earth and is all the water that will ever be on Earth.
  • Clouds are made up of liquid water droplets that have collected together in the air

Insects

 Insects have:
- 3 main body parts
- 6 legs
- antennae
- a hard shell called exoskeleton
- wings (some)

Some insects are social, and live and work together in colonies. Each insect has a job in the colony - the workers, the defenders, and the queen. Ants and bees are social insects.

Some insects grow through metamorphosis, where they change their shape. Others grow by molting, where they shed their exoskeleton.

Insects can be both helpful and harmful. Harmful insects are called pests. Pests can bite/sting, spread diseases, destroy crops, and damage houses. Helpful insects pollinate flowers, eat pests, make things like silk or honey, and clean or eat dead things.
