Announcements:

Dear Parents,
Please note that we do not celebrate any holidays in school. This includes events on Thursday. Please be aware about sending Halloween candy on Friday, and try to do everything possible to help your child make wise choices that day.

Please send your student with a healthy snack and lunch to help him or her be successful throughout the day in the classroom.  We have noticed that students who have highly-processed and sugary meals have difficulty concentrating in class and regulating behavior, especially in the afternoon.

Please remember to send your child with a reusable water bottle for the school day.

Reading groups continue this week, and students should be reading their leveled readers out loud with parents 15-20 minutes every night. Please send books back to school on Mondays and Thursdays. Remember to record your child’s reading time in their planners!

Students will come home with their Insect Project packet on Monday. Please look for it in their green folders. Please note that this project is done primarily at home and has incremental due dates, so please assist your child in keeping track of these dates and managing their time.

Academics
Math
This week we will continue our unit on length, focusing on inches, feet and yards.
Reading
This week we will begin our Greek Myths unit in conjunction with the Ancient Greece unit in History. We will read about Pandora and Prometheus, and Theseus and the Minotaur.
Poetry
This week we will recite Foreign Lands.
Language Arts
The students will review concepts we have covered so far this year. In writing we will continue to work on copywork and dictation.

Spalding
This week we will begin learning new words in Spalding.  We will learn 10 new words on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday.  We will review on Thursday and test on Friday.
Science
This week we will be sending home the information packet for the Insect Project. This project is an at-home project with incremental due dates - please go over this with your student.
History & Geography
We will continue our Ancient Greece unit by talking about the city-state of Sparta and comparing and contrasting Sparta and Athens.

Best,
The Second Grade Team
